Abstract

This article addresses aspects of the representation of an epidemic outbreak of smallpox in Brazilian literature by focusing on Tereza Batista tired of war, a novel by Jorge Amado. The aim is to outline approximations between the novel’s plot and content and current images of covid-19 pandemic present in various media (TV shows, internet sites, news, social media, etc.). The approach’s starting point is this pandemic’s images circulating in society and simultaneously leading us towards the past the novel portrays. The rereading of Amado’s narrative allows us to notice some of its elements being recurrent in covid-19 images circulating in narratives, accounts, news, comments among others.
