Abstract

This paper wants to discuss “the place” occupied by the scientific institutions in the Empire of Brazil. The start point is the conceptual apparatus proposed by Ilmar Mattos and Marshall Sahlins, respectively a historian and an anthropologist. They both use the concept of structure to determine a certain period of a historical process and the dynamics of social relations. Is this concept still useful to understand the process of creating scientific institutions in the 19th Century, in the Empire of Brazil? For this, we are going to make an approach closer to the historiography of science looking forward to how the authors are presenting the scientific institution in this context. The critical point is to present how the structural basis of this institutions were related to the political project of the saquaremas and aligned with their ideal of national science. In conclusion, we want to pay attention to how this structure breaks out in the decade of 1870, and how this rupture affects the scientific institutions
