Abstract

The second half of the 19th century was a troubled period in the history of Brazil. The Brazilian people began to deal more forcefully with issues such as the process of abolishing slavery, the Religious Question and the possibility of a Republic, which ended up contributing to the intensification of the liberal campaigns defended by Freemasons. On the other hand, there were the conservative campaigns, represented by different spheres of society, among them, the ultramontane priests. This article proposes to discuss the arguments exposed in the manifesto called “The ultramontane invasion”, this text, addressed by Freemason Joaquim Nabuco, in the Great East of Brazil in 1873, as well as the Masonic arguments exposed in the Great Eastern and Supreme periodical council of Brazil, within the religious question (1872-1875), an episode that ended up stirring up the disputes between Catholics and Freemasons in Brazil. The research seeks to analyze the position taken by the Freemasons in face of the Romanization attempt proposed by the ecclesiastics in the seventies of the eighties.
