Abstract

The present article has as its main object of analysis an instrumentalization of torture as a State policy, in the military dictatorship (1964-1985), and as a recurring practice today. For the construction of the object of study, the text starts, initially, from the investigation on the repressive structure implemented by the dictatorial period. In a second step, the psychology of torture and the psychological consequences caused by this mechanism are addressed. And in the third part there are arguments, based on the roots of brazilian authoritarianism, which point to an explanation for the permanence of torture and its characteristics in contemporary times.
