Abstract

This article aims to analyze the relationship between the trade in meat and hides of cattle and horses with the epidemics that hit the population of Vila de São João da Parnaíba, located in the Captaincy of Piauí. The “killing workshops” – the place where the animals were slaughtered – while being a potential space for business in that region, was also pointed out as an unhealthy environment that caused annual epidemics. Thus, based on the dialogue with the historiography of health and slavery, this study will analyze the discourses of colonial authorities, the clashes of opinions on cattle workshops and the relationship between epidemics, trade and slavery in the period from 1772 to 1786.
