Abstract

The present article aims to analyze the permanence of the greeting with the hat above the head in the representation of Brazilian political ruptures in the 19th century. Recurring in Brazilian political iconography since the arrival of the portuguese Court in Rio de Janeiro, this greeting is present in most of the period’s historical paintings. The study focuses on the legitimation intended by the configuration of these paintings, which establishes the representation of the new imposed regime, analogous to a relationship of cordiality between the actors of the greeting, both greeting and being greeted.
