Abstract

Abstract: This present article aims to understand the conception of nature in the work of the romantic doctor Emílio Joaquim da Silva Maia (1808-1859). In addition, we sought to relate his scientific works and his notion of the natural world with the historical and political context in wich his works were developed. Having as main work analyzed by us the medical discourse that sought to combat the diseases that affected the Court in the 30s of the 19th century, associating the cutting of forests near humid places as the main cause of fevers, Silva Maia´s environmental criticism and his way of understanding the circulation of organic elements and the interdependence between beings and their environments accorting to the theory of nature’s economy were also issues addressed in this article.
