Abstract

Abstract: The resignation of President Jânio Quadros, on August 1961, culminated in an institutional crisis, resolved through a precipitous change in the system of government. The replacement of presidentialism by parliamentarism imposed a reduction of powers on the new president, João Goulart, who coexisted with three prime ministers between September 1961 and January 1963. Rejected by the people in a referendum, the parliamentary system applied in that period gained space in historiography as an indisputable failure. However, there are still few studies to deepen aspects of this context. This article aims to analyze how Bloch Editores' magazine Manchete was covered in the process of replacing the first office, as well as the installation, operation and fall of the second office, led by Francisco de Paula Brochado da Rocha, politician and jurist from Rio Grande do Sul, an ally of Jango. The analysis of periodicals under rigorous criteria helps to build useful knowledge for the elaboration of the History of Brazil.
