Fatah and Hamas posture in relation to graffiti in Occupied Palestinian Territories

a political-visual dispute

Authors

Abstract

The graffiti has been used by various political groups in Gaza and the West Bank as a way of marking their influence and activities in various districts and to spread their ideologies among the population. From this, the objective is to understand the way in which this political dispute also operates in the visual field through the expressions of street art. For that, different records of these communications were raised, analyzed and described taking into account the political power of these expressions. In this way, it was possible to observe different intensities of control by Fatah and Hamas in relation to graphite, despite the similarity in the logic of the configuration of the communications itself. The central argument is that the political-social dispute observed between such factions also has an important visual facet, evidenced by the systematic use of graffiti.
