Abstract

Resumen/Abstract: We seek in this article to analyze the movie The Dagger produced in Ponte Nova, in 1959, by the Central Brazil Mission. This audiovisual source allows us to understand the context and historical perspective of the Presbyterian missionary project in the region and present in the film work. The film allows us to problematize the multiple representations contained in the evangelistic missionary project, contributing to understanding the different dimensions of the missionaries' work and understanding the image and self-image produced and reproduced in the cinematographic work. The film addresses the arrival of the first missionaries in the Chapada Diamantina region, at the beginning of the 20th century, and their relationship with the local population, heavily Catholic, which is being converted by the creation of several institutions: Ponte Nova Institute; Grace Memorial Hospital; Nursing School, Farm School. Institutions that brought together and demarcated the space of action of reverends such as William Waddell, Jaime Wright and João Dias de Araújo.
