As masculinidades populares são hegemônicas?

Abstract

This article, although provisionally and abbreviated, seeks to discuss the construction of masculinities of popular segments in a city in the interior of Bahia, Feira de Santana, in the last decades of the twentieth century. It also seeks to test the plausibility of using the concept of hegemonic masculinity to explain the masculinities of popular men that emerge from the legal documentation considered here. For that, we resort to the analysis of exemplary cases through a dense and microanalytical reading. Therefore, we try to operate at the confluence between the Social History of Culture, gender studies, feminist studies and masculinity studies to answer the questions posed by the empirical findings. In the end, it appears that the concept of hegemonic masculinity hides more than explains the experiences  and the ideias about be man of working class men.
