Histories of iconology

historiographical perspectives on the construction of Erwin Panofsky’s iconological method

Authors

Abstract

This paper’s purpose is to outline the explicative models for the changes in Erwin Panofsky’s iconological method. Historians tend to explain this process by focusing on the author’s definitive migration from Germany to the United States due to the rise of Nazism. Despite the undeniable importance of Panofsky’s migration, this explanation seems insufficient. Therefore, we consider the need to build new analytical pathways that consider what iconology has become in Panofsky’s work and in the History of Art in general.
