Abstract

This text transits through the different policies implemented in Brazil and, in particular, in Rio de Janeiro, for valuing cultural assets related to Afro-Brazilian cultural identities. Starting from a mythical construction of racial equality, it goes through the policies implemented during the period of re-democratization, advances on the broadening of the concept of intangible cultural heritage and goes on to the recognition of Valongo Wharf as a world heritage site. By traversing this long path, the text intends to investigate the potentials and limitations of the policies of recognition of the Afro-Brazilian cultural heritage in the construction of an effective democracy and in the promotion of the Brazilian cultural and racial diversity.
