“A prominent place among the most conscientious scholars of the Homeland’s History”: Miguel Archanjo Galvão and historiographic activities in the 19th century (1858-1898)
Miguel Archanjo Galvão e os fazeres historiográficos no oitocentos (1858-1898)
Abstract
Miguel Archanjo Galvão (1821-1903) was an important Brazilian man of letters in the second half of the 19th century. A member of the bureaucratic group of the Empire of Brazil, he traveled to different provinces and invested in historiographical activities related to the history of Brazilian tithing and the reconstruction of chronologies of the country’s rulers, as well as investigations into numismatics. In this article I aim to analyze the conception of history mobilized by the Brazilian literate from his historiographical production. His historiographic works can be understood as debtors of a project to invent national autonomy and to break with Portuguese legislative traditions. In this sense, activating these writings makes it possible to think about the intricacies of nation projects in disputes in the imperial literate scenario throughout the second half of the 19th century.
