The Emporium of Naukratis:
Historiography between the 18th and 21st Centuries
Abstract
The emporium of Naucratis was established in the Nile Delta between the late 7th and early 6th centuries BCE. Throughout its existence, it served as one of Egypt's principal commercial ports. This Greco-Egyptian settlement fostered intense commercial, cultural, and religious exchanges among the Mediterranean peoples. Due to its distinctive nature, Naucratis has emerged as a focal point for scholarly inquiry into Greco-Egyptian interactions in antiquity. This article offers a succinct bibliographic overview of key works spanning from the 18th to the 21st centuries that have aimed to investigate Naucratis. The primary aim of this study is to contextualize the scholarly production concerning the emporium and, subsequently, to analyze significant shifts in the discourse surrounding Naucratis.
