Abstract

Introduced during the colonial period, bullfighting was present here until the first
decades of the 20th century, alternating periods of greater or lesser frequency and popular
acceptance. The aim of this work is to identify the presence of bullfighting in the city of Ouro
Preto and analyze its dynamics and how such practice was discursively located in relation to the
modernity imaginary pursued at that time, based on the reading of newspapers. To achieve this
goal, we read the newspapers Liberal Mineiro and A Província de Minas, and thus, conducted an
analysis and discussion on the topic. Bullfighting in Ouro Preto in the late 19th century assumed
a commercial model, available in the growing entertainment market. In addition, it was seen as a
reflection of the transition between the rural and urban world and the city's efforts to modernize.
