Liberdade Religiosa em um Estado Religioso: liberalismo e catolicismo nos debates da Assembleia Constituinte de 1823

Abstract

O presente artigo tem como objeto de análise os debates transcorridos na Assembleia Constituinte de 1823 que trataram de temas referentes à religião do Estado e que acabaram por denunciar uma tentativa de compatibilização do catolicismo com o universointelectual do liberalismo. Com isto, busca-se refletir acerca das relações entre a tradição e a modernidade na dinâmica da construção do nosso Estado nacional, compreendendo melhor em que medida a religião, enquanto um dos aspectos estruturantes da cultura política daquela sociedade, influenciou no processo inicial de elaboração das nossas bases jurídico-políticas

ABSTRACT: This article has as object of analysis the debates in the Constituent Assembly of 1823 about the state religion and who show the attempt to reconcile Catholicism with the intellectual universe of liberalism. So, we try to reflect about the relationship between tradition and modernity in the dynamics of building our State, to understand how religion, as one of the fundamental aspects of political culture of that society, influences on the process of elaboration of our legal and political bases.
