Edwiges de Sá Pereira: A voice of Pernambuco in the Second International Feminist Congress (Rio de Janeiro, 1931)

Abstract

In the year of 1931, the Pernambuco‟s Edwiges de Sá Pereira did give the Second International Feminist Congress the conference “Women for women”, in which moth a panorama of the reality experienced by women in Brazil in the early 20th century. At the heart of the discussion was the questiono of access to education and to work for the female. In this sense she did proposes a classification of women in three categories: the “don‟t have to” work, “need and know” work and that “needs and doesn‟t know” work. For integration and/or improvement of those that were entered in each category, suggests the establishment of an educational Project, aimed at construction of vocational schools, which would bring a transformation in everyday life, especially those who are in the third category. So, we will seek to analyze such a feminist proposal, who have the education and work as decisive mechanisms for the inclusion of women in public life. As a theoretical-methodological reference, we are guided by the gender discussion of the historian Joan Scott.
