Abstract

The political situation of the Provisional Government (1930-1934) reveals details about the interaction between the State and the media. The closeness with political figures of the government made Rio de Janeiro’s publications thermometers of the repression perpetrated on newspapers. The destruction of Diário Carioca in 1932 not only had political consequences, which is widely portrayed in historiography, but also illustrates the scenario of journalistic newsrooms and the continuity in the repression of the work of the media. The present survey on the jamming of the Diário Carioca contributes to a construction of the political mosaic of the Provisional Government and demonstrates the perspective of Fluminense press considering the importance of media freedom of thought and citizenship.
