Abstract

This article presents an analysis of the transformation of the wealth inventoried in the Lage district between 1871 and 1912, period of the decline and institutional disappearance of slavery. The region, which had one of the highest rates of captive population in the entire Comarca of Rio das Mortes in the 18th and 19th centuries, was the stage for the accumulation of wealth due to production to supply the Minas Gerais internal market. From the mid-nineteenth century onwards, a process of fragmentation of the great fortunes of the region began, as can be better understood by the case of the Pinto family, which at the beginning of the period studied was one of the largest landowners and slaves in the place.
