Abstract

This article aims to analyze, from the gender category and studies on masculinity, confessions and inquisitorial denunciations of indigenous men, enslaved black people, mamelucos and old-christian colonists prosecuted for the crime of witchcraft in the captaincy of Grão-Pará, especially in the second half of the century XVIII. It is questioned how some of the motivations of these men in using and carrying out practices considered witchcraft and magical-religious (mandinga bags, prayers to saints, etc.) could be linked to the attempt to exercise different masculinity practices. Therefore, were selected processes and denunciations present in the Book of Visitation of the Holy Office of the Inquisition to the State of Grão-Pará and also archived in the fund of the Holy Office of the Inquisition of Lisbon of the National Archive of Torre do Tombo (ANTT).
