Abstract

This article focuses on Paul Éluard’s “Liberté”, seeking to analyze textual and circumstantial aspects of the original poem, as well as evaluate the main translation into Brazilian Portuguese. The theoretical and methodological framework includes formulations from genetic criticism, translation studies and poetry criticism. Initially, some elements related to the poem’s genesis and reception are highlighted. After outlining the context, the poem is analyzed and its translation is commented on, both of which are summarizes in the appendix. Finally, the article points to the distorted use of the word “liberty” today and the importance of reclaiming its power in the resistance against authoritarianism and hate speech. Authentic liberty offers itself to translation and relies on it as a movement of openness to the foreign, an act of embracing diversity.
