This essay on the importance of João Guimarães Rosa’s literary relationship with metaphysical and spiritual themes is divided into two parts. In the first part, we highlight some of the author’s confessions about “sonhos premonitórios, telepatia, intuições” (Rosa, [1967] 2009, p. 221), drawing attention to the relationship between these personal experiences and his dual fictional writing process. To develop this idea (“parallel process”), in the second part of the essay we analyze a series of imagery motifs written by Rosa in a pair of mirrored short stories from Primeiras estórias (1962) –namely, “Sequência” and “Nada e a nossa condição” – with the aim of proposing a reading of this pair as a kind of literary version, or mythical transformation, of some central episodes of the biblical Hebrew exodus.
