Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze the relation among three works, all entitled Girl with a Pearl Earring – the portrait by Johannes Vermeer, the novel by Tracy Chevalier and the film by Peter Webber. The analysis is based on the concept of transtextuality proposed by Gérard Genette which includes five categories: intertextuality, paratextuality, metatextuality, architextuality, and hypertextuality. Although the greatest emphasis is on hypertextuality, the other categories will also be discussed.
