César Aira, bad literature, contemporary fictionAbstract
In this article, I intend to discuss César Aira’s works, especially the novels published in the early 1990s, using the notion of “bad literature,” which is central to understanding the author’s work and plays different roles in the history of Argentinian literature. Having as starting (and concluding) point the Nouvelles impressions du Petit Maroc, a small book by Aira recently published in Brazil, I re-read both his essays and some of his novels – bearing in mind that often the two genres are mixed – in order to infer hence a decisive transformation undergone by the author’s fiction, which implies, as will be seen, the invention of a new writing procedure.
