Abstract

In 1917, Paul Valéry published, after decades of silence, a long poem written throughout the First World War. La Jeune Parque, which takes up Racine’s classic Alexandrian form, projects Paul Valéry as the official French poet, for somehow synthesizing the ambiguous moving atmosphere of the moment. Translated in 1987 by Augusto de Campos, according to the consolidated rules in Brazil of metric value and scale, it is rewritten here in poetic prose so that the modulations that imply in its game of images become even more evident. I read of the poem in the key of mourning, because now probably it’s time to cry.
