Abstract

This paper presents part of the history of the french verse, taking into consideration its tradition, its classical possibilities and the rebellion of the Romantics. Among the many modifications that Romanticism brought to French literature, the alterations to the patterns of classical verse writing are one of the best formal examples of the achievements of the school. The original poetic creativity of a Victor Hugo, as well as the toil of literary translators responsible for absorbing and bringing to the French language what the Romantics produced in other countries created a concerted effort that was responsible, in the long run, for bringing modernity into the land of the Gauls.
