One or Two Strangeness?
Revisiting Shklovsky and Perloff
Keywords:
Strangeness, V. Shklovsky, M. Perloff, Literary TheoryAbstract
This paper revisits two major works of 20th century literary theory: Viktor Shklovsky’s "Art as Device" and Marjorie Perloff’s Wittgenstein’s Ladder. Our objective is to understand how the concept of strangeness was articulated by these authors and what are their approximations and distances. Even starting from different bases – linguistics for Shklovsky and philosophy of language for Perloff – and even though Perloff tries to distinguish herself from Shklovsky’s concept, it was also possible to perceive a convergence between these approaches. Finally, we also emphasize a certain productivity that these concepts can still offer to the literary theory today.
