Anguished and Cruel
A Portrait of Bentinho in Dom Casmurro
Keywords:
Machadiano novel, Narrator character, Bentinho, Interpretative analysisAbstract
This work comprises a reading of the novel Dom Casmurro, with emphasis on two aspects, anguish and cruelty, as from Bentinho, the narrator character. We consider a route win which the lector will accompany simultaneously the narration and the construction a picture for Bentinho. He will stop begin the young man in love and will become anguished and cruel. Based in Rosenfeld and Candido (2014) about the fictional composition and a figurative absence characteristic of fiction, compared to other artistic modalities, we verified that the machadiano novel approaches the narrator character and readers; this allows that the image be composed at the same time by reader and narrator – this, having opportunity of non judgmental interlocution, remembers the years lived and reflects on them, while the reader understands that cruelty, self-inflicted and directed at others, worked as reaction for the anguish experienced by the narrator character
