From the Erasure of the Tragic to the Possibility of Tragedy
a Reassessment of Eduardo Lourenço’s Hypotheses on the Brazilian Style of Tragedy

This article aims to problematize Eduardo Lourenço’s characterization of Brazilian literature as an “erasure of the tragic.” To this end, the article is divided into three parts, each corresponding to a specific objective: the first aims to present Lourenço’s concept of the “erasure of the tragic,” highlighting its psychoanalytic foundations; the second seeks to rethink Lourenço’s notion of the “tragic,” emphasizing its similarities with Lacan’s concept of the “real”; finally, in the third part, we propose an interpretation of the Brazilian tragic based on certain premises from Aristotle’s Poetics. We thus conclude that, if Brazilian literature can be understood as an “erasure of the tragic,” it is only in the sense that our ways of representing catastrophe resist the sublime register and an aesthetics that values traumatic silence.
