Abstract

This article aims to tackle the relationship between translation and commentary. Therefore, we intend to reflect on the importance of using paratexts (Genette, 2009), such as preface, to translate the short story “Recitatif” (1983), by the African-American female author Toni Morrison. This short story, which is unpublished in Brazil, has a series of particularities relative to ethnic and racial identity issues. Such issues demand an accompanying discourse by the translator. This analysis will draw upon the views of Lawrence Venuti (1995; 2002); Antoine Berman (2002; 2007); André Lefevere (1990; 1992); Maria Tymoczko (1999; 2010) and Paulo Henirques Britto (2012) on aspects regarding literary translation.

Doutora em Letras - Estudos da Linguagem pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (2015), Mestre em Letras - Teoria da Literatura pela Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (2007), Bacharel em Letras - Tradução pela Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (2005), Licenciada em Letras - Língua Inglesa e Língua Portuguesa pela Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (2004/2003). É professora de Língua Inglesa e Língua Portuguesa do Centro Federal de Educação Tecnológica Celso Suckow da Fonseca (CEFET/RJ). Tem experiência na área de Letras, com ênfase em campos como os Estudos da Tradução, os Estudos Literários e os Estudos Culturais, principalmente no que diz respeito a questões relativas à diáspora africana, além do Ensino de Língua Inglesa.
