the essay aims to interpret the novel Água funda, by Ruth Guimarães (1946). So, as a theoretical setting, it uses a set of sculptures by Aleijadinho, in addition to Guimarães’ own studies. At the final lines, it proposes a comparison between the novel and the ideas of Antonio Candido on the social change suffered by “caipiras”. Within this dialogue, the essay attempts to analyze the method of construction of the novel, arguing that the legend known as Mãe de Ouro is the lost symbolic foundation of the plot. The signs of a culture impacted by conservative modernizations appear encrypted in Água funda, that turns, in the plot and in the characterization of the protagonist, a critical figuration of the ethnocide of the caipira culture.
