The article proposes a reading of the vertical montage procedure in the composition of Liev Tolstoy’s novel Anna Karenina, based on the investigation of montage in different artistic systems carried out by filmmaker and theorist Sergei Eisenstein. In his studies, Eisenstein addresses the relevance of montage as a way of thinking about the artistic structure that sets in motion the complex network of materialities that results in its imagery. Throughout the text, the bases of the concept of imagery and vertical montage in Eisensteinian theory are presented in order to propose an analytical path of the montagistic processes present in Tolstoy’s novel. The hypothesis is that updating the notion of vertical montage as a driving force behind the composition of the literary text reveals other possibilities for understanding the artistic image that mobilizes the space between what is revealed to the reader and the proposition of artistic thought.
