A formação de um soldado
O quarto de Jacob, o romance de formação e a Grande Guerra

Neste artigo, temos como objetivo refletir sobre o romance de formação do início do século XX e a Primeira Guerra Mundial em O quarto de Jacob (1922), de Virginia Woolf. Argumenta-se que as experimentações formais com o narrador onisciente e com a caracterização do protagonista permitem a elaboração de críticas sobre a integração do indivíduo em seu âmbito social e sobre o aspecto teleológico do Bildungsroman tradicional. Com a Grande Guerra, as premissas temáticas e formais desse gênero literário transformam-se radicalmente. Em O quarto de Jacob, a morte anunciada do protagonista determina o télos do romance (a guerra) e a impossibilidade de integração social, questionando assim a própria noção de Bildung e de representação da realidade. Para discutir essas questões, debruça-se sobre o arcabouço teórico de Franco Moretti, Judy Little, Gregory Castle e Dorothea E. von Mücke.
