Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess the different dimensions related to the treatment of children (to 0-12 years) with cleft lip and palate (CL/P) in the “Centrinho”, a highly complex reference service for individuals with craniofacial deformities in Minas Gerais, Brazil. A cross-sectional study was performed using an individual instrument (questionnaire). The questionnaires were applied by the same examiners to the mothers or the responsible guardian, after the dentist’s appointment. The participant population of this study consisted of 60 CL/P children who, regardless of sex, skin color, origin, or nationality, were nonsyndromic, had been diagnosed, and were undergoing treatment at the reference service. The results showed that 63.3% of the patients were males, 36.7% were females, and 78.3% were white, with ages ranging from 1 month to 10 years. As regards the type of cleft, a predominance of cleft lip and palate (56.6%), followed by the isolated cleft lip (26.6%), could be observed. Concerning the identification and reference to the “Centrinho”, 56.7% of these references were made by physicians and 50% of the CL/P patients had been referred to this service in the first six months of life. The results provided information on the treatment of patients with clefts within this highly complex reference service for the Department of Health. Future studies will be able to further the present analyses to better understand an important population in the context of the Brazilian public health system.
