Abstract

Aim: To verify the association between dental trauma in permanent teeth and its impact on oral healthrelated quality of life (OHRQoL) of children, adolescents, and their families, using a critical literature review.

Methods: A bibliographic study was carried out using the PubMed database, using a combination of keywords, with no restrictions on language or publication date. Duplicate articles were excluded, and the selection of the studies was carried out in two phases. In the first stage, the ttitle and abstract we read, and the articles that fit the theme were selected for further reading of the complete text. In addition, data extraction from the selected studies was conducted using a normalized table.

Results: Of the 397 articles encountered in this search, only 14 presented all of the information required by the methodological criteria. Among these studies, two used the longitudinal study method, seven used the cross-sectional study method, and 5 used the case-control study method. Eleven studies had been conducted in Brazil, one in Canada, one in the United Kingdom, and one in Albania. The individuals included in this study ranged from 8 to 19 years of age. Significant associations between dental trauma and its impact on OHRQoL were found in 13 studies.

Conclusion: The majority of the studies found an association between dental trauma and the OHRQoL of children/adolescents and their families.
