Abstract

Aim: To determine the epidemiological profile of patients attended to at the Emergency Clinic (EC) of the School of Dentistry at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (FO / UFJF).

Materials and Methods: The present study investigated the local reality, defining the number of patients through a demographic data survey, main complaints, query of health and procedures performed. This study evaluated 1,181 patients from medical records logged at the FO / UFJF emergency clinic, regarding the patients attended to between 2006 and 2007. In addition, the distribution of patients in neighborhoods according to their place of residence was determined.

Results: This study identified a predominance of women (61.7%), mean age of 37 years, Caucasian (62.0%), and unmarried (49.2%). It could be observed that 57.9% of patients (684) lived in areas of social exclusion. The main reported complaint from patients was pain (46.7%), followed by the need for clinical procedures due to fractures, loss of restoration or provisional prosthesis (19.5%), and dental trauma (8.0%). Among the procedures performed, the most frequent were related to dentistry (24.4%) and endodontics (17.4%).

Conclusion: Findings from this survey will aid in the planning of actions to implement benefits for patients and for student education.
