Abstract

Composting is one of the most viable ways to treat organic waste. However, its inconvenience is the time, the delay that the conventional process takes. In this way, ways have been sought to speed up the composting process. There are processes that employ aeration, heating and mechanical agitation. Such procedures have proven to be efficient, but require extra devices, which makes the process more expensive. Due to the higher costs involved in such procedures, they will not be taken into account in this study, since one of the greatest advantages of composting is precisely its low cost. There are several possible procedures to speed up the composting process. Such procedures can be divided into: pre-treatment, addition of co-substrates and changes in the process. The use of biochar and microbial inoculants have been very efficient in accelerating the composting process. Cellulase, despite having been cited as a very viable substance to accelerate the process, has not been used in many studies for this purpose.
