Abstract

Childhood music, games and toys have always had a profound meaning and importance in Brazilian culture, due to its rich and diverse repertoire, and its social function.   This work presents Brazilian traditional children’s music and games as material and immaterial heritage and relates the growing number of protective initiatives of this traditional repertoire carried out in Brazil in the last two decades.  Robert Harrison defends that the phenomenon of globalization has caused a general increase in the concern with the loss of local traditions, and a thus a need for recognition and overvaluation of this heritage as a global phenomenon. This article is based on the definitions of material and intangible heritage defended by UNESCO, the reflections of Rodney Harrison regarding the protection of local cultural traditions as a global phenomenon, as well as the field and in publications and platforms implemented by the Brazilian Ministry of Culture, and the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute - Iphan, the body responsible for safeguarding the Brazilian cultural heritage.
