Abstract

This essay explores how David Foster Wallace conceives tennis as an aesthetic, spiritual, and cultural experience. Drawing on essays such as “Roger Federer as religious experience” and “The professional artistry of Michael Joyce,” the study examines Wallace’s notion of “kinetic beauty” – an aesthetic appreciation of athletic movement as a form of sensory transcendence. It also analyzes the spiritual dimension of sport, portraying elite athletes as near-mystical figures whose performances evoke moments of grace. Tennis, in Wallace’s view, offers glimpses of the sacred even within secular contexts. The essay further investigates the role of the spectator as interpreter and meaning-maker, emphasizing that it is often the audience – and the essayist himself-who grants metaphysical resonance to athletic feats. Wallace, a former tennis player and literary figure, acts as a translator between the act of playing and the act of understanding, transforming sports journalism into literary essay. The article concludes that Wallace’s writing elevates tennis to a space of reflection, art, and transcendence, contributing meaningfully to the fields of literature, sports philosophy, and cultural studies.
