Social Media and Brazilian Olympic Athletes: An Analysis Based on Grounded Theory and Statistical Methods Applied to Communication

Main Article Content

Carlos Roberto Gaspar Teixeira

Abstract

This article proposes a research method based on Grounded Theory from social network data with a quantitative approach using statistical techniques. The procedure analyzed posts between 2016 and 2017 of official profiles on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter of athletes who competed in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The goal was to understand the relationship and influence between the number of followers of these profiles with the news, Google searches, and network interactions. The article inferred a significant correlation between the growth of followers, news stories related to athletes, and winning a medal, with Instagram being the platform most used by the examined athletes. In the end, the methodological proposal allowed us to establish relationships between the quantitative results with theoretical discussions present in the studies of communication and social media.
