Abstract

The sonata plays a crucial role in Western music, being a fundamental genre since the 18th century, both for composers and performers. Its analysis has evolved over time, with theoretical studies diversifying in the editions of the Grove Dictionary from 1956, 1980, and 2001, which reflected changes in historical and semantic approaches. Initially seen as a tripartite structure, sonata analysis became more flexible, considering the contributions of composers and the social conditions of each era. In the 20th century, theorists such as Schenker and Czerny deepened harmonic and structural studies, while new approaches to rhythm and semiotics emerged. Despite its historical importance, the value of the sonata was reassessed by postmodern movements, but it remains a subject of ongoing interest, although still lacking a comprehensive systematization in its analytical history.
