Abstract

Analysis of the first three movements of Brian Ferneyhough’s Kurze Schatten II for solo guitar. It discusses compositional techniques and strategies used by the composer. It also includes concepts and structures typical of the composer’s musical language.

Author Biography

  • Felipe Merker Castellani, Santa Marcelina College

    Felipe Merker Castellani, a composer, studied guitar, composition, and music analysis with Professor Paulo de Tarso Salles. He joined the composition program at Santa Marcelina College in 2003, where he studies with Paulo Zuben and Sérgio Kafejian. He is undertaking a research project on Brian Ferneyhough's work Kurze Schatten II, supported by a FAPESP grant and under the supervision of Silvio Ferraz, with whom he studies composition. His works have been performed at the XV and XVI Biennials of Contemporary Brazilian Music, the II and V National Meeting of University Composers, and the 43rd Música Nova Festival.
