Abstract

Study about the influence of musical Impressionism on the compositional style of Brazilian composer Henrique Oswald (1852-1931), through the analysis of the work En Rêve. It also puts the composer in the perspective of the Brazilian and European Music scenes at the end of the Nineteenth and beginning of the Twentieth Century.

    André Cardoso is a violist and conductor graduated from the School of Music at UFRJ, with a Master's and Doctorate in musicology from Uni-Rio. He studied conducting with conductors Roberto Duarte and David Machado. He received a scholarship from the VITAE Foundation for three years for advanced studies in conducting in Argentina with conductor Guillermo Scarabino at the University of Cuyo (Mendoza), the Argentine Catholic University, and the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. In 1994, he was the winner of the National Conducting Competition of the National Symphony Orchestra of UFF, subsequently conducting orchestras such as the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra, the Paraíba Symphony Orchestra, the Minas Gerais Symphony Orchestra, the Petrobras Symphony Orchestra, and the National Theater Symphony Orchestra of Brasília. He also works as a record producer, having received the 1998 Prize from the São Paulo Association of Art Critics (APCA) and the 1999 Sharp Prize for the recording of the opera “Colombo” by Carlos Gomes. He is currently a professor of conducting and orchestral practice at the School of Music at UFRJ. As a researcher, he is dedicated to the study of Brazilian music from the 18th and 19th centuries. He was the winner of the II National Monograph Competition José Maria Neves, promoted by the Brazilian Academy of Music, which resulted in the publication of the book “Music at the Royal and Imperial Chapel of Rio de Janeiro” in 2005.
