Abstract

Between November 19 and 22, 2002, the First National Meeting of the Brazilian Association of Ethnomusicology (ABET) was held in Recife, gathering around 200 participants to discuss topics related to music in Brazil and around the world. The event, focused on the centenary of the recording industry in the country, addressed popular music, phonographic recordings, and cultural heritage, in addition to exploring the interdisciplinarity of ethnomusicology. Conferences and roundtables on the study of musical change, the preservation of sound collections, and stylistic fusions in Brazil were highlights. The meeting also marked the redefinition of ABET's structure and featured a varied music program, with performances reflecting the local culture. At the end, Salvador was chosen as the host city for the Second National Meeting, scheduled for 2003.
