Abstract

This paper discloses a brief collection of notes about Brazilian composer Antônio dos Santos Cunha, from the late eighteenth-century Minas Gerais School. It describes the original scores of his masterpiece called Missa Grande and tries to identify operatic influences in several excerpts of the composition. This paper also presents anecdotal facts based on the study of the remaining scores.

Author Biography

  • Edílson Rocha , Federal University of Bahia

    Edilson Rocha holds a Master's degree in Conducting from UFBA, under the guidance of conductor Erick Magalhães Vasconcelos, and is also a doctoral candidate at the same institution, expected to graduate in 2008. He graduated in voice and conducting from UFMG, the latter in Maestro Sílvio Viegas's class. He has participated in master classes with conductors Carlos Alberto Pinto Fonseca, Mögens Dahl, Cláudio Ribeiro, among others. He was a teacher in conducting workshops organized by UFSJ, UNIMONTES, both in Minas Gerais, and UNESP in São Paulo. In 2007, he worked as a contracted professor at the Institute of Arts at UNESP. He taught musical structuring, voice, and conducting at the Padre José Maria Xavier Conservatory in São João del-Rei, MG. He has conducted various choral groups, such as the Chamber Choir of EM UFMG, the Coral da FALE – UFMG, and orchestral groups like the Cantate Orchestra, OSUFBA, among others. He has dedicated himself to the study, interpretation, and dissemination of the colonial Minas repertoire.
