Some representational issues related to the Normative Chart for singers of Brazilian Portuguese

Abstract

This article aims to document and discuss some representational issues related to the development of a Tabela Normativa para o português brasileiro cantado [Normative Chart of Brazilian Portuguese for Singers]. Two proposals are addressed. First, the one voted at the IV Encontro Brasileiro de Canto [4th Meeting of Singers of Brazilian Portuguese], held in São Paulo on February, 2005. Second, the article published in the Boletim da Associação Brasileira de Canto [Bulletin of the Brazilian Association of Singing], issue 28, October/November, 2005. These two documents are discussed, including the results already achieved and aspects deserving further investigation.

Author Biography

  • Thaïs Cristófaro Silva, Federal University of Minas Gerais

    Thaïs Cristófaro Silva is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Letters of the Federal University of Minas Gerais and a researcher at CNPq. She earned her PhD in Linguistics from the University of London (1992) and completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Newcastle (2002). She coordinates the King’s College London-UFMG agreement and participates in the University of Texas-UFMG agreement, supervising master's and doctoral students in the Sandwich Program. In the Graduate Program at FALE-UFMG, she coordinates the Research Line on Sound Organization in Human Communication. Her professional work is multidisciplinary, primarily linked to Theoretical and Applied Linguistics with a focus on phonology, segmental aspects of speech pathology, first and second language acquisition, and speech technology. As a specialist in phonetics and phonology, she has a primary interest in the organization of sound systems in natural languages. She is the author of Fonética e Fonologia do Português: Roteiro de Estudos e Guia de Exercícios, Exercícios de Fonética e Fonologia (Editora Contexto), and Pronúncia do Inglês para falantes do português brasileiro: os sons (FALE).
