Abstract

St. Luke’s Passion is a work that exemplifies Krzysztof Penderecki’s style in the 1960s. In this study, the author brings up tonal aspects of thePassion and points out a hypotheticalrelationship between Penderecki’s work and J. S. Bach’s choraleAn Wasserflüssen Babylon (BWV 267).The comparison between their fundamental structure (Ursatz) and their textual organization (dispositio) displays how music and text are closely related in both compositions, and how they highlight relevant and distinct aspects of the musical-textual drama.
