Abstract

The six Sonatas and Sonatinas for violin and piano by Ernst Mahle were written over a period of 25 years, during which the composer consistently favored neoclassical structures, contrasting with a modern language. He also demonstrated an evolution in compositional techniques and an increased incorporation of rhythmic and melodic elements from Brazilian folk and popular music. These characteristics reflect the development of his own musical language, a result of his continuous search for different sonorities, stemming from a study of various types of scales, combined with the influence of Brazilian music and the works of Béla Bartók.
