Este artículo es parte de mi tesis doctoral (University of Iowa, EE. UU., 1999) y tiene dos objetivos. Primero, analizar y definir la técnica del violín folk norteamericano, basándose en la observación de cientos de violinistas folk tradicionales, en mi propia experiencia de 24 años como violinista folk y en una comparación entre este estilo (shuffle básico, cruce de cuerdas, drones, adornos melódicos, deslizamientos, hoe-downs, hornpipes, breakdowns, valses y reels) y el estilo del violín clásico. Segundo, discutir un enfoque sistemático para aprender y reproducir el sonido auténtico del violín folk para el violinista clásico. Incluye una breve revisión de la literatura sobre los métodos de violín clásico y anticipa partes de mi libro Fiddling for Classical Violinists, que será publicado por Mel Bay Publishing a principios de 2001.
